Just wondering if anyone can shed a little light for me. I've been checkin out my newly purchased '73 GT. There's a decal on the fin cover that says "oil injected" and its got a mikuni carb. The stamp on top of the recoil side says 396.  Yamaha twin. There is no oil resevior. Were these macines ever oil injected and I'm just missing my resevior or is this more likely a newer engine?

All the ROF Yamaha powered sleds were NOT oil injected. AND to best of my memory we only had 3 Yamaha engines, 290 single, 340 twin and 440 twin. Are you sure it says 396cc. ? I may be wrong but...
Gene.

Thanks Gene. I'm going to have to look again... that was the only stamp I could find and I was also next to certain they weren't oil injected as well... I thought 396 sounded odd too. I can't even recall Yamaha offering a "400" but have been away from the vintage machines long enough that my memory is a little foggy on some of those things..Lol.  It still has the dual exhaust pipes but from what I've been reading that doesn't jive with a single Mikuni carb.

I'm starting to think my GT has been monkeyed with over the years. I have found that Yamaha offered a 27 hp 396 in 1970 & 1971 only and pics of the engine look exactly like what I have...  Gonna look again tomorrow and see if I can get a couple decent pics.  Never doubted you for a second Gene, thanks.

I parted out a 73 Cherokee a while back that had a 396 in it.  Said 400 on the hood.  As far as i know there were the 73 Apaches Comanches and Cherokees that were all offered with the 396 but not the GT's
According to my brochures.

Does anybody out there know if there is a way to tell by the serial number or anything what size the factory motor should be in ROF's?

There is no meaning or patterns to the serial numbers.

I am happy to say I just procured a 1973 Yamaha 440 f/b with a Keihin carb, none oil injected engine so I am on the way to a "correct" '73 GT.
