Did ya ever wonder? One day in the summer of 71 a couple of us were working in the welding fab shop at the back corner of the building. Next to the door of the shop was a pallet of 8 new CCW 340 twin engines sitting there with clutches on but no mounting plates, carbs, or exhaust manifolds. They reminded me of a cluster of old stationary engines that my father had when I was a kid. I used fire them up and they would all putt away contentedly. I got to wondering if these things would fire up without a carburetor and would sit there putting away like the old stationary engines. I pulled the tape off the intake manifolds and the exhaust stubs. Got my trusty squirt primer can and gave 6 or 7 good shots in to the intakes. The magnetos were ready to go but had no kill switches hooked up. I expected maybe the engine would fire up and sit there going put put. Wrong! I put my foot on the first engine on the edge of the pallet and gave the rope a tug two little pops and this thing fired up. Instant 10,000 RPM, the clutch snapped shut causing the engine to jump off the pallet and go spiraling around the floor like a tornado. The sound was nearly loud enough to shater the windows. It took a minute to burn the fuel and for the engine to stop spinning, a little scraped up but no harm done. Put the engine back on the pallet. That was a pretty intense surprise. Went back into the fab shop no longer wondering if you need a carburetor to get a engine to run. Wade
